The Actor's Key offers acting classes and workshops with casting directors for both young and adult actors. These workshops are a "key" for actors to get a leg up on the competition, and walk through the door to the next level of success! Think of the workshops as individual "tutoring sessions", where you work with someone who will help give you advice on improvement, and point you in the direction of bettering yourself as a professional actor.

The Actor's Key is unique because:

1. You are always working with a scene you choose ahead of time--you get to prepare and be spectacular in front of the casting person, so they can truly see what you are strongest at and help you figure out what you need to work on.

2. You read one on one with a reader--One of the best aspects of our workshops is that you are one on one, paired with a screened, skilled, professional actor who is your reader, and they're purely for YOUR benefit. Their goal is to make YOU look good, so that the CD can accurately aid you with advice on becoming a stronger performer.

3. You get written feedback every time--invaluable for passing on to your representation so they can better guide you, and for your growth as an actor, so that you can improve your skill set in order to reach your professional goals.*

We highly recommend using these workshops synergistically with acting classes (we offer a few and can recommend some fabulous acting teachers for private coaching!) to gain a full, well-rounded education in the business of acting and the craft of performing.

Acting classes help you to learn how to be a good actor— casting director workshops aid you in honing those skills with the aid of professionals in the show business industry!

*If we ever have a deviation from this format, it will be listed in the casting director's BIO section, so please check! That is also where you will find sides instructions.

All cancellations and sign ups must be done on the website. Correspondence is mainly done through email at actorskey@gmail.com.

The people that work here are so bossy and so irritating. They only allow you to do scenes they approve.. Not scenes from shows that the casting people actually cast.. The CDs I know personally all tell me how this format is difficult for them because they cannot teach when it is a scene they do not know.. This is like an audition and not a class and I find it extremely weird. It is like paying to do a general and completely not valuable. This place is the worst.

I'm sorry you aren't enjoying our format! In the five years we have been open, we've only had a handful of instructors ask to change the format, and those instructors have format departures listed (using cold reads, classroom settings instead of one on ones, etc.). It is illegal to allow scenes from shows that are currently casting to be used, as per the Krekorian Talent Act and also CSA guidelines, hence our need for sides approval.

With a library of over a thousand sides, and criteria for you as the actor to bring in a scene of your choice that adheres to them, we hope to make your experience with us as actor-centered as possible, and give you the best opportunity to gain valuable feedback from our instructors. To that end, the written evaluation sheets you receive at the end of each session with the instructor are geared towards the learning experience and growing as a performer.
As the 2011 Best Workshop Place as voted by Backstage Readers, and also the only place that a number of our guests go to, we like to think we have our actors and instructors' best interests at heart.
PS- if you would like to email us with your real name, we can look at the workshops you were unsatisfied with that you have taken so that we can hopefully rectify your situation and experience! We can be reached at actorskey@gmail.com

One on one with the casting director, prepared scenes ahead of time. This place is the best. Such a great vibe and the casting directors all seem to actually want to be there. I've been to others where it is downright painful. I make friends there and leave feeling like I got my money's worth, so I keep going and going!

I really like Actors Key. This was the first place I found that the workshop format is set up like an actual audition. Everyone is in room for class setting for the Q&A and then we go in one at a time to perform our scene. I've really been able to make some great connections with CDs. I also like being able to select a scene from their database of scenes and prepare it beforehand and perform it, just like an actual audition. The only area for improvement would be to have more available scenes in the database and have more description of them: gender, age, what's going on, etc. up front so we don't have to go through a lot of them to find what we need. Great place, environment and staff!

This is the workshop place that every other one wishes they were! Seriously, people are copying their format because it is simply the way it should be.
First, there is a Q&A where everyone can ask the casting director questions about anything at all. That lasts about a half hour. Then actors go in a separate room one at a time with prepared scenes and read one on one with the casting director. This is how real auditions are, not getting paired up with an actor who is no good and a scene you are not right for.
After the reading, you get an evaluation form where the CD gives you feedback on everything from your headshot to your age range to your acting chops.
You get so much more from this place than simply paying to get in front of a CD.
Don't go anywhere else. Seriously.

This is my top place to go for CD workshops. You prepare your own scene -- based on either sides available on their site or you can ask for your own scene to be approved.

Because I can control the scene and my work ahead of time, I am more able to showcase my talents. I also get a chance to develop a business relationship with the CD because I get one-on-one time.

While cold-reading workshops are okay (I did them for a long time), I feel that they leave much more to chance and do not give you the quality time for developing a business relationship. CD workshops should be serious business networking and showcasing, along with learning about the tastes of each office/CD. Actors Key helps me to achieve what I think CD workshops should be good for.
